Chemistry a non-metallic element which exists in several forms, the ordinary one being a yellow rhombic crystalline solid, and which burns with a blue flame and a suffocating smell; used especially in making gunpowder and matches, in vulcanising rubber, in medicine, etc. Symbol: S; relative atomic mass: 32.064; atomic number: 16; density: 2.07 at 20°C.
2. a pale yellow colour with a greenish tinge.
3. any of various yellow or orange butterflies of the family Pieridae.

Usage: Traditionally sulphur is the British spelling and sulfur the American one. In technical and scientific writing sulfur is now standard throughout the world, although the sulphur spelling is still dominant in Australia.
